Glacier National Park Huckleberry Phenology Citizen Science

Published by National Park Service | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: January 25, 2026 | Last Modified: 2020-05-07T00:00:00Z
This form and associated feature layer contain points collected by Glacier National Park (Montana) Citizen Science volunteers and staff to identify the distribution and seasonal timing of huckleberry growth between 2022 to present. Volunteers record the presence of huckleberry shrubs within a 10 foot circle every one hour during their hikes along trails. The survey includes questions regarding basic survey conditions (time, date, location, number of people present, etc.), presence of huckleberry plants, phenological stage, a geopoint to mark location, and field for plant photos. It also includes fields for recording effort time and trailhead start and end location. This survey is intended for use within Glacier National Park, Montana. This project was created using Survey123 and is managed by the Glacier National Park Citizen Science team in the Crown of the Continent Research Learning Center. The resulting data from submitted surveys is used to compile final reports regarding huckleberry phenology in the park and to ground truth predictive maps of huckleberry distribution to inform understanding of availability of food for grizzly and black bears. Data is collected by citizen science volunteers and student and service groups. Data is QA/QC’d by Glacier National Park Citizen Science staff, backed up monthly and shared with USGS Northern Rockies Field Science Center research collaborators. Basic Purpose: Glacier National Park Huckleberry Phenology Citizen Science survey form Dataset Format: Form and feature layer Time period: Data collected between 2022 to present
