Published by National Institute of Justice | Department of Justice | Metadata Last Checked: November 14, 2025 | Last Modified: 2019-11-26T09:30:55
Wave I of the NEMS occurred in 2008 and included a national sample of 5,777 adults aged 60 and above. The study was designed to determine the prevalence of and risk factors for elder mistreatment and abuse, including physical, sexual, emotional, neglectful, or financial abuse, in community-residing older adults. The Wave II follow-up data were collected in 2016 from a subset of the original participants (n=774), or those who reported psychological, physical, or sexual (but not financial) abuse at Wave I. Wave II was designed to measure the effects of elder abuse in terms of health and mental health outcomes and criminal justice system participation and satisfaction.
