2022-2023 NSDUH: State Estimates of Substance Use and Mental Health

Published by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration | U.S. Department of Health & Human Services | Metadata Last Checked: September 07, 2025 | Last Modified: 2025-09-06
Find state-level estimates for 38 measures of substance use and mental health from the 2022-2023 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). These estimates are based on small area estimation (SAE) methods in which state-level NSDUH data are combined with other data from smaller geographies. The combined data are used to create modeled state estimates of the civilian, noninstitutionalized population ages 12 and older, both overall and by age group.Along with the estimates, the collection includes: tables that allow statistical comparisons between estimates (across time and geography), an overview of the estimation methodology, and a review of other state-level substance use and mental health data sources. The data are available as tables by measure or by state in a variety of file formats.
