2024-2029 Five Year Prescribed Fire Plan for Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

Published by National Park Service | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: January 25, 2026 | Last Modified: 2024-04-03T00:00:00Z
This layer depicts the planned prescribed fires for the next five years in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. This dataset is updated annually to reflect a different 5 year period. The five year prescribed fire plan is submitted each year by the parks Fuels Specialist and approved by the Fire Management Officer. The plan is also reviewed for environmental compliance. In the spatial data for the five year plan, each polygon delineates a separate segment or subsegment of a burn unit. Polygons are delineated at varying scales and varying levels of accuracy, which may or may not align with actual unit boundaries on the ground. (For example, the burn unit may be aligned to a stream as a containing feature. The polygon may be aligned to the corresponding stream in GIS, but the stream layer may not be accurate.) Whenever possible, map method and accuracy are described in each feature's inline metadata. However, burn units are frequently reused and original map method may not always be known.
