3-D water current, vertically averaged 2-D water current, 3-D salinity and DIN, 2-D water level collected from Numerical model (i.e., FVCOM) simulated current, salinity, and DIN time series in Barataria Bay and adjacent Louisiana-Texas continental shelf from 20210101 to 20210825 (NCEI Accession 0301508)
The Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) was applied over the northern Gulf of Mexico continental shelf that includes Barataria Basin and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) to simulate three-dimensional circulation and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) dispersive patterns driven by larger rivers and river diversion, tides, and winds. The numerical model mesh covers a much larger computational domain which extends longitudinally from Mobile Bay, Alabama to west of Galveston Bay, Texas and offshore to ~ 300 m - 1000 m isobaths over the Alabama-Mississippi-Louisiana-Texas continental shelf and slope. Simulated hydrodynamic variables include sea level elevation, u- and v-velocity component, salinity, and turbulence parameters. DIN is simulated as a passive tracer (i.e., without considering the relevant biogeochemical processes) with three major input sources: the Mississippi River through the various passes in the birdfoot delta, the Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion inside Barataria Basin, and GIWW at Larose inlet. The FVCOM simulation period is from 1 January 2021 to 25 August 2021. Output file is in NetCDF (Network Common Data Form) format, which is a set of software libraries and self-describing, machine-independent data formats that support the creation, access, and sharing of array-oriented scientific data. Output time interval is daily (at 00:00 GMT everyday). DIN variable is saved in the NetCDF files as variable temperature since we modified FVCOM source code and used the temperature subroutines for advection and diffusion process to calculate DIN advection and diffusion process.
