A Revised Strategy for Estimating the Prevalence of Mental Illness

This report presents current and prior methodological approaches for estimating the prevalence of serious mental illness (SMI) and any mental illness (AMI) among adults aged 18 or older using 2008 to 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data. Revised SMI and AMI estimates for 2012 are presented by by age group, gender, race/ethnicity, education level, employment status, region, county type, receipt of mental health treatment, federal poverty level and insurance status.
