Bathymetry in the Downstream Approach to Peoria Lock, Near Peoria, Illinois, During Testing of an Automated Barge Clearing Deterrent, July–September 2022

A variety of new technologies are being evaluated to mitigate the spread of invasive carps from the Illinois River to the Great Lakes. In 2022, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Geological Survey undertook a field-scale interagency study to determine the efficacy of an Automated Barge Clearing Deterrent (ABCD) in flushing live fish away from commercial barge vessels entering Peoria Lock on the Illinois River. The ABCD is a forced air manifold system that is placed at the channel bed to create a longitudinal array of bubble plumes. In support of this study, the bathymetry (bottom elevation) of the downstream approach to Peoria Lock, near Peoria, Illinois, was surveyed several times in July, August, and September 2022 using a multibeam echosounder mapping system (MBMS) with integrated inertial navigation solution (INS) mounted on a manned survey vessel. These surveys provide high resolution bathymetric data prior to the installation of the ABCD (July 29, 2022), a day after the installation of the ABCD (August 26, 2022), on several days during the testing of the ABCD (August 29, 30, and 31, 2022; September 1, 2, 6, and 12, 2022), and after the testing was complete (September 28, 2022). The raw data were processed and gridded using elevation values computed from the Combined Uncertainty and Bathymetry Estimator (CUBE) method, which provides an estimate of the bathymetric elevation and the total propagated uncertainty (TPU) at each gridded location. The grid resolution for the pre-installation survey (July 29, 2022) is 0.25 meters (m) and the grid resolution for all subsequent surveys is 0.05 m. This page contains the following for each of the survey dates: a comma delimited text file containing gridded bathymetric elevation and TPU values and a zipped folder containing the full point clouds for each survey line as LAS files.
