Biophysical ocean measurements (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll fluorescence, oxygen and currents) collected over six years at long-term Mooring site M5 on the eastern Bering Sea shelf, Alaska, by the EcoFOCI group at NOAA, PMEL, 2009-07-02 to 2015-10-28 (NCEI Accession 0309065)

Biophysical moorings were deployed 2009-2014 at "M5", an established NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) research data-collection site on the eastern Bering Sea Shelf (approx. 59.9°N, 171.7°W), collecting time series data at various depths in the water column. Six moorings were deployed in the Fall (July-September) of each year, overwintering for 8.5-12 months, and three additional summer moorings were deployed (July-September, 2009 and 2010, and May-August, 2011). Various ocean research ships were used for data collection including NOAA research vessels Miller Freeman (MF09-04L2, MF10-06), Oscar Dyson (DY10-06), UNOLS ship Knorr (KN195-10) and charter vessel F/V Aquila (AQ12-01, AQ13-01, AQ14-01). Biophysical subsurface mooring filenames, e.g. 12bs-5a, indicate year (12), Bering Sea area (bs) and defined location ("5" for M5). Instrumentation included SeaBird SBE-37 (Microcat), SBE-39 and SBE-16 (SeaCat) recorders, WetLabs EcoFluorometers, Aanderaa Seaguard RCM-9 current meters and PMEL MTR temperature sensors. Data include temperature, conductivity, salinity, pressure, water depth, oxygen concentration (microgram/kg), oxygen saturation (%), raw chlorophyll fluorescence (V), chlorophyll a (microgram/l), current components U and V, and current speed and direction. Each of the 9 deployments has a subset of listed instruments and variables. See Cruise reports and data files for specifics. The cruises and data collection were funded by the NOAA, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory EcoFOCI program and the NOAA Arctic Research Program with additional support from AOOS, the NOAA-regional ocean data partnership. The Ecosystem and Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (EcoFOCI) program is a partnership with NOAA PMEL and NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC). In 2012, 2013 and 2014, the DOE, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) supported part of the work through the ARCWEST and CHAOZ-X projects. Scientists from PMEL and the University of Washington cooperative institute (CICOES) collaborated in this data collection and related data processing and analysis. Deployment and recovery operations on this cruise were managed by EcoFOCI personnel from NOAA/PMEL, NOAA/AFSC and UW/CICOES. Mooring time series data were processed at NOAA/PMEL/EcoFOCI using standard techniques. Time is recorded as UTC. Data contacts: Phyllis Stabeno, Shaun Bell, Ryan McCabe, Peggy Sullivan. Longitudes are in degW.
