Comparative Performance of Four Prototype Mechanical Building Cooling Systems in a Desert Climate
Data and result of approximately fifteen months of monitoring of four houses located in the desert climate of Borrego Springs, California. Four houses were constructed using identical floor plans but differing wall materials, and different cooling systems that were designed to reduce energy use in this extreme hot climate. Cooling systems evaluated include a high SEER two-speed air conditioner, an evaporative condenser, two prototype two-stage evaporative coolers, and two floor cooling systems. Detailed monitoring was used to develop performance maps for the air conditioning systems which are compared to manufactures' data. Energy savings for the high performance systems was evaluated relative to a standard 13 SEER air conditioner, and the economic potential of these systems is reviewed. The paper also evaluates the performance of two unique floor cooling systems.

"description": "The goal of the Building America Program is to develop innovative system engineering approaches to advanced housing that will enable the U.S. housing industry to deliver affordable and environmentally sensitive housing while maintaining profitability and competitiveness of homebuilders and product suppliers in domestic and overseas markets. For innovative building energy technologies to be viable candidates over conventional approaches, it must be demonstrated that they can cost-effectively increase overall product value and quality while significantly reducing energy use and use of raw materials when used in community scale developments. To make this determination, an extensive program is necessary to develop; test and design advanced building energy systems for all major U. S. climate zones in conjunction with material suppliers, equipment manufacturers, developers, builders, designers, and state and local stakeholders. This program applies system research approaches to the development of advanced energy efficient residential buildings using system performance studies in test houses, pre-production houses, and community scale developments. The final products of each research project shall be performance measurements and cost/performance evaluations in prototype houses, pre-production homes, and community-scale developments. These measurements and evaluations shall lead to development of innovative system concepts that can be applied on a production basis by the industry partners and stakeholders involved in the program.",
