Comparison of Acoustic Recorders and Field Observers for Monitoring Tundra Bird Communities in Northwestern Alaska

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: January 27, 2026 | Last Modified: 2024-12-16T00:00:00Z
Acoustic recorders can detect the presence of birds and these detections may be used for the purpose of population abundance or estimation. This monitoring project compared the abundance of tundra-breeding birds detected through both acoustic monitoring and observational surveys. The data package is comprised of four tables: (1) habitat type, including vegetation height at sites where acoustic recorders and human observer point counts occurred, 2) bird detections obtained using the observer methods, 3) bird detections obtained using the acoustic monitoring method, and 4) taxonomy table of bird species detected during both observer and acoustic recorder survey methods.
