DWH NRDA Collected Dead Birds

Published by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: January 25, 2026 | Last Modified: 2011-08-24T00:00:00Z
The DWH NRDA Collected Dead Birds dataset contains information on all of the dead birds collected as part of search efforts after the Deepwater Horizon spill. Many of the birds documented in the DWH Collected Dead Birds Dataset are utilized as part of avian injury quantification efforts, including the Shoreline Deposition Model (SDM). The SDM utilizes information on the number of birds collected, search effort (from the DWH Wildlife Search Effort Dataset), and parameters such as the number of birds likely missed by searchers (searcher efficiency) and how long carcasses remain on the shorelines (carcass persistence) to estimate the rate at which carcasses deposit along the shorelines. The DWH Collected Dead Birds dataset contains information on the date the bird was collected, location, species, condition and other notes.
