To better understand ocean mixing in extreme storm conditions and to use that knowledge to improve parameterizations of ocean mixing. Evolution of the upper ocean thermal structure is heavily impacted by ocean mixing and is often a first order control on the intensity of the storm through the ocean mixing feedback. Better descriptions of ocean mixing are therefore expected to lead to improved forecasts of hurricane intensity.
