Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory GIS Dataset of North Country National Scenic Trail Superior Falls Property and Vicinity, Wisconsin and Michigan

The Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory GIS Dataset of North Country National Scenic Trail Superior Falls Property and Vicinity, Wisconsin and Michigan is adapted from a U.S. Geological Survey 3DHP Hydrography dataset by Jonesi, Thunen, and Buto (2024), a U.S. Geological Survey 3DEP Lidar Dataset for Portions of Iron County, Wisconsin and Gogebic County, Michigan (2024), a U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report map by Cannon, Woodruff, Nicholson, Hedgman, and Barber-Delach (1999), Iron County Tax Parcel Data by the Iron County Government (2025), Gogebic County Tax Parcel Data by the Gogebic County Government (2025), SSURGO Soil Data by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (2025), and a North Country National Scenic Trail KMZ dataset by the North Country Trail Association (2025) (see noco_superior_falls_metadata_faq.pdf for full source map citations). GIS data layers and GIS tables are available in the following GSRI-supported GIS data formats: 1.) an ESRI file geodatabase (noco_superior_falls_property.gdb) supported with an ArcGIS Pro 3.X map file (.mapx) file (NOCO_Superior_Falls_Property_Wisconsin_Geologic_and_Soil_Resources_Inventory.mapx). 2.) an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) geopackage (noco_superior_falls_property.gpkg) supported with a QGIS project (.qgz) file (NOCO_Superior_Falls_Property_Wisconsin_Geologic_and_Soil_Resources_Inventory.qgz) with limited symbology. 3.) a 2.2 KMZ/KML file (noco_superior_falls_property.kmz) for use in Google Earth, however, this format version of the map is limited in data layers presented. In addition to the GIS data and supporting map files, three additional files are included: 1.) a readme file (noco_gsri_readme.pdf) 2.) a user-friendly FAQ PDF version of the metadata (noco_superior_falls_metadata_faq.pdf). 3) a collection of high-resolution, geotagged photographs taken during a site visit by NOCO and GSRI personal to the Superior Falls property. The noco_gsri_readme.pdf provides a description of the North Country National Scenic Trail Superior Falls Property data package and is a good entry point for using the GIS data. The data were completed as a component of the Geologic and Soil Resources Inventory (GSRI) program, a National Park Service (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Division funded program that is administered by the NPS Geologic Resources Division (GRD). This dataset integrates spatial data from multiple sources with varying scales and resolutions, including SSURGO soils (~1:12,000), USGS 3DEP lidar (~1 m resolution), bedrock outcrops (1:100,000 scale), county parcel data (variable scale), and USGS 3D Hydrography Program data. The data are not uniform in scale and should be used with consideration of the original source limitations. Users of this data should thus not assume the location of features is exactly where they are portrayed in ArcGIS Pro or other software used to display this dataset.
