Inventory and Evaluation of Inland Fisheries at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Published by National Park Service | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: January 07, 2026 | Last Modified: 2007-01-01T00:00:00Z
A survey of fishes was conducted at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore to establish a recent species record and to document conditions before zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) greatly affect fish composition. Fish community information was collected including presence/absence, species richness and diversity, contaminant, and size and age class data in streams, inland lakes, and selected Lake Michigan shoreline areas. The new investigations, combined with a 1979 inventory, report a total of sixty-five species. Three were not cited as being observed in the previous inventory including lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), brook silversides (Labidesthes sicculus), and round goby (Neogobius melanostomus). It is likely that lake whitefish and brook silversides were missed in the 1979 study. Round goby is an exotic species increasing in abundance in the nearshore areas of Lake Michigan. Monitoring recommendations for future fishery surveys are made.
