Landfilled Waste Composition Dataset version 1

Published by U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD) | U.S. Environmental Protection Agency | Metadata Last Checked: August 02, 2025 | Last Modified: 2025-05-15
The purpose of this dataset was to compile, in a single location, the landfilled solid waste quantity data from various state government reports, repositories, or databases. The development of the dataset has several motivating factors, including to understand the amounts and types of wastes that are disposed in non-hazardous waste landfills and to understand the availability of these types of data across our United States. This dataset only contains tonnages (i.e., weights or masses in U.S. tons) of disposed materials/wastes in as much detail as the State provides. It does not include amounts of wastes recycled, composted, incinerated, transferred, or generated. For instance, a landfill may receive ash that comes from the incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW; e.g., waste-to-energy ash). The amount of incinerated ash that is landfilled would be reported here but not the amount of waste the incinerator received.
