Longitudinal Profile of Kalamazoo River Reference Reaches Between Trowbridge Dam and Allegan, Michigan, 2023
This dataset contains longitudinal profiles of the river bed, water surface, bank tops, and riffle crests along an approximately 15 kilometer (km) reach of the Kalamazoo River between the Trowbridge Dam and Allegan, Michigan (MI). The bed profile and bank and riffle top elevations were derived from an existing digital elevation model (DEM) comprising topographic and bathymetric data for Area 5 of the Kalamazoo River. The DEM was created from topobathymetric aerial lidar data collected in November, 2016, combined with multibeam bathymetric data collected in May, 2017 to fill gaps in the lidar. The river bed profile was drawn from the thalweg (deepest part of the channel). Bank top heights were manually identified from cross-section profiles extracted from the DEM every 100 m along the channel and represent the elevation of the lower bank at each section. Riffle crests were identified manually from the channel bed longitudinal profile as prominent local maxima. The water surface profile was developed from water surface measurements collected with survey-grade global navigation satellite system (GNSS) by USGS staff in June, 2023. For Reference Reach 1, bed slopes calculated between successive riffle tops ranged from 0.028-0.282 percent and the average water surface slope was 0.079. For Reference Reach 2, bed slopes ranged from -0.22-0.183 percent and the average water surface slope was 0.049. For Reference Reach 3, bed slopes ranged from -0.036-0.275 percent and the average water surface slope was 0.059. For Reference Reach 4, bed slopes ranged from -0.135-0.078 percent and the average water surface slope was 0.014.
Data are provided in an Excel spreadsheet (tabular and graphical) and a CSV file (tabular only). Additionally, shapefiles of the GNSS water surface points and of the channel centerline to which longitudinal distances for all the profiles are referenced are included.
