The Department of Animal Services has a fundamental mission to protect public health and safety, ensure the humane treatment of  domesticated animals and provide quality, professional service to the public. LMAS serves as an authority in domestic animal welfare by creating and preserving a safe and humane community for both people and domesticated animals. LMAS strives to eliminate the euthanasia of adoptable animals in Louisville Metro through education, community engagement, enforcement and leadership efforts.Data Dictionary:Month: The numerical month of the intake.Year: The year the type of intake occurred.Number of Animals: The amount of animals taken in by the shelter under the specific intake type/subtype.Intake type and Intake Subtype: The reason why the animal was impounded at Metro Animal Services (MAS). CONFISCATE The animal was impounded due to a violation of Louisville Metro Ordinance or Kentucky Revised StatutesABANDONED Animal was impounded because of a violation of the Abandonment ordinanceBITE Animal was impounded due to biting someone CHAINING Animal was impounded for a chaining violation COURT ORD Animal was impounded as a result of a court order CRUELTY Animal was impounded for a violation of the Cruelty ordinance or statuteDANGER DOG Animal was impounded because of a violation of the Dangerous Dog/Potentially Dangerous Dog ordinanceEVICTION Animal was impounded during an evictionHOSPITAL Animal was impounded due to the owner being in the hospitalNEGLECT Animal was impounded for a violation of the Provision of Necessities ordinanceOWNER DIED Animal was impounded because their owner diedPOLICE Animal was impounded by the policePOTDANGER Animal was impounded because of a violation of the Dangerous Dog/Potentially Dangerous Dog ordinanceRESTRAINT Animal impounded by an animal control officer for restraint violationUNPERMITED Animal was impounded by an animal control officer for not being licensed or permittedDISPOSAL The animal was brought to the shelter deceased to be properly disposed FIELD An animal control officer picks up a deceased animal while outside the shelter.
