Published by NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce | Metadata Last Checked: December 18, 2025 | Last Modified: 2023-09-15T00:00:00.000+00:00
Marine Trackline Geophysical data represented by sub-bottom seismic data, which we sometimes also call chirp (based on its operating mode), uses a 3.5 kHz operating frequency. Research vessels use this technology to produce cross sections or vertical slices of the upper tens to hundreds of meters of the sediments below the seafloor.
