NCCOS Assessment: Post placement vegetation, sediment, and imagery data from Deal Island Wildlife Management area, MD, 2024-07-22 to 2025-07-29 (NCEI Accession 0310721)

Published by NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce | Metadata Last Checked: January 29, 2026 | Last Modified: 2025-12-19T00:00:00.000+00:00
The Deal Island beneficial use project involved raising the marsh platform's elevation using dredged material from the lower Wicomico River. NCCOS researchers conducted intensive data collection both before and after the sediment placement. This data captures the post-placement conditions of the study area as compared to NCEI Accession 0301733. This data includes vegetation, elevation, sedimentation rates, and carbon stock. In the winter of 2023/2024, sediment necessary for maintaining navigability in the lower Wicomico River was pumped across the peninsula into the Deal Island Wildlife Management Area. This placement concluded in February 2024. Native species were subsequently planted throughout the summer of 2024. Following the sediment placement, NCCOS researchers gathered new measurements of elevation, porewater chemistry, vegetation, and sediment characteristics. The data includes orthoimagery of the island from 2024 and 2025 as well as monitoring data used to describe the study area throughout 2024 and 2025 post placement.
