NCRN Eastern Hemlock Inventory

Published by National Park Service | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: January 07, 2026 | Last Modified: 2015-11-01T00:00:00Z
Spatial data associated with the NCRN eastern hemlock inventory. Within the National Capital Region, approximately four forest types were identified to have possible Eastern hemlocks, Tsuga canadensis within their habitat. The goals of the NCRN Hemlock inventory protocol are: Where are the remaining patches of living Eastern hemlocks in the NCRN parks? In areas formerly dominated by Eastern hemlocks, what regenerating vegetation is replacing the dead canopy trees? If we find living Eastern hemlocks stands, we may address the following question as well: Are there differences in the forest floor plant composition in stands where hemlocks are still living and stands where hemlocks are mostly dead?
