NOAA Climate Data Record (CDR) of Monthly Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR), Version 3.0

Published by NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce | Metadata Last Checked: February 10, 2026 | Last Modified: 2025-08-26T00:00:00.000+00:00
This Climate Data Record (CDR) contains the monthly mean Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) time series in global 2.5 degree x 2.5 degree equal-angle gridded maps spanning from January 1979 to present, and continuing monthly. The OLR is estimated from radiance observations from the operational polar-orbiting sounding instruments, including HIRS, IASI and CrIS, via multispectral OLR algorithm for HIRS, and spectral flux estimation algorithms for the hyper-spectral instruments, along with other temporal and spatial averaging methodologies. These OLR CDR products are generated with HIRS/IASI/CrIS OLR retrievals from TIROS-N series satellites, MetOp series satellites, and JPSS series satellites. The OLR retrievals are inter-satellite calibrated and maintain radiometric traceability, while the temporal averaging employs the empirical diurnal models for Monthly mean product derivation. The new HIRS OLR regression coefficients improve the retrieval consistency between HIRS-based OLR retrievals and IASI/CrIS-based OLR retrievals. The data file format is netCDF-4 with CF metadata, and it is accompanied by algorithm documentation, data flow diagram and source code for the NOAA CDR Program.
