The present invention relates to a wavelength shifter comprising a supporting structure of solid material and a fluorescent wavelength shifting dye capable to absorb light in the UV range and reemit light in the visible range, the dye being homogeneously distributed therein. According to the present invention the supporting material is a fluoro-thermoplastic material (fluoropolymers) having a very high transmittance in the UV range selected from the group comprising tetrafluoroethylene, hexafluoropropylene, vinylidene fluoride and a polymer of tetrafluoroethylene and ethylene, and the wavelength shifting dye is an organic fluor compound.
