Softener comprises terephthalic acid dialkyl ester, where the alkyl residue exhibits a longest carbon chain of at least 4 carbon atoms and a total of 5 carbon atoms per alkyl residue. Independent claims are included for: (1) a composition comprising the softener and polymer compositions such as PVC, polyvinyl bromide, polyallyl methacrylate or homo- or copolymers based on ethylene, propylene, butadiene, vinyl acetate, glycidylacrylate, glycidylmethacrylate, methacrylate, acrylates (where oxygen atom of (meth)acrylates bound to alkyl residues or alcohols with 1-10 carbon atoms), styrene, acrylnitrile, cyclic olefin; and (2) the preparation of terephthalic acid dialkyl ester comprising hydroformylation of 3-4C olefin to give 4-5C aldehyde, hydrogenation of the obtained aldehyde to alcohol and reaction of the alcohol with terephthalic acid or its derivative to the corresponding diester.
