A method and a component placement device are proposed for adjusting at least one optional setting of a process characteristic of the component placement device, which component placement device has at least one standard setting. The optional setting can be activated by means of an electronic key to be supplied to the component placement device. The optional setting is temporarily activated by feeding the electronic key to the component placement device, whilst the standard setting is reactivated at least after the expiry of a predetermined period of operation of the electronic key.
