Phylogeography of the Mud and Red Salamanders (Pseudotriton) in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Published by National Park Service | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: January 25, 2026 | Last Modified: 2018-10-17T00:00:00Z
Field Methods: Specimens are found in the field, measured for basic morphometrics (snout-vent length, mass), and the tip of the tail is clipped and placed in 95% ethanol or an RNA-later solution. I will specifically be collecting the larval stage of these species, because larvae can be reliably captured in spring-fed pools and seeps by hand or with dipnets. After a tail tissue is taken, animals are returned to their natural habitat otherwise unharmed.
