The DSP-R is a computer-controlled subsystem that digitally samples a received spacecraft signal (both X and S-band) through the use of four analog-to-digital (A-D) converters. The digitized samples, along with the monitor data necessary to reconstruct the signal, are recorded on tape, and/or transmitted in realtime to SFOC. Analysis of variations in the amplitude, phase, and frequency of the signal provides information on the ring structure, atmospheric density, magnetic field, and charged-particle environment of planets which occult the spacecraft. Additionally, this signal is needed for gravity wave detection.
