Raw and processed shipboard data, data analysis products, and metadata collected for the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Communities (MDBC) Restoration Projects

This dataset collection contains raw shipboard data collected during expeditions conducted by the Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Communities (MDBC) restoration projects (hereafter MDBC projects), and processed data products derived from those shipboard data collections. The MDBC projects are administered by the Open Ocean Trustee Implementation Group (OOTIG) to compensate for injuries to natural resources from the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill. The goals of the projects are to improve understanding of MDBC to inform management and ensure resiliency, restore mesophotic and deep benthic invertebrate and fish abundance and biomass for injured species, and actively manage MDBC to protect against multiple threats and provide a framework for monitoring, education, and outreach. There are four MDBC projects: Mapping, Ground-truthing, and Predictive Habitat Modeling, Habitat Assessment and Evaluation, Coral Propagation Technique Development, and Active Management and Protection. This dataset collection includes raw biological, oceanographic, geophysical, and navigational data, and associated metadata, in addition to other potential data types and multimedia outputs. Processed data and analyzed products that have been derived from raw data are also included. This collection includes MDBC project data collected beginning in 2021, with NCEI Archive Management System (AMS) accessions (a unique identifier and record for specific datasets) organized by expedition year. Within an AMS accession, there are directories for individual expeditions. There may be multi-year expedition data products and data products that are associated with the MDBC projects but are archived as independent AMS accessions. Additionally, AMS accessions (archived data) preceding the MDBC projects (collected from 1980 to 2021) and sourced from federal and state agencies, as well as from academia and industry, may also be added to the collection.
