Samoan swallowtail butterfly reproductive response to host plant characteristics, 2013-2014 (ver. 2.0, July 2024)

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: January 27, 2026 | Last Modified: 2024-07-08T00:00:00Z
This data release includes metadata and tabular data documenting the reproductive response of the Samoan swallowtail butterfly (Papilio godeffroyi) to characteristics of its host plant (Micromelum minutum) and habitat. Data was collected at approximately monthly surveys of marked host trees at eight sites, mostly in or adjacent to the National Park of American Samoa (NPSA), Tutuila Island, during 2013-2014. One site was sampled near the western tip of Tutuila, outside NPSA. Data sets document: (1) physical and habitat characteristics of individual host trees; (2) phenology of individual host trees; (3) physical and habitat characteristics of host tree stands; (4) sampling effort during monthly surveys of host trees for swallowtail specimens; and (5) characteristics of swallowtail specimens collected on surveys and and their location in host trees. The revised version (2.0) contains two additional records in the file entitled "Samoan Swallowtail, Host Plant and Habitat, Specimens_v2.0." All data from the original version appears in this data release. First posted: October 26, 2022 (available from author). Revised: July 2024 (version 2.0).
