Target groups masks for climate envelope models for 15 threatened and endangered species in Florida

Published by U.S. Geological Survey | Department of the Interior | Metadata Last Checked: January 27, 2026 | Last Modified: 2020-08-30T00:00:00Z
We developed a modelling spatial domain, or mask, to delimit the modeling extent for each species (n=15 species), as a part of a larger project to compare climate envelope models outputs that were generated using two types of predictor variables: expert opinion and statistical method (Brandt et al. 2017). The species masks, or model domains, were defined separately for each species using a variation of the “target-group” approach (Phillips et al. 2009), where the domain was determine using convex polygons including occurrence data for at least three phylogenetically related and similar species (Watling et al. 2012). This dataset is separated into 15 zipped GeoTIFF rasters, each with its own metadata documentation. Spatial extent and descriptions in this document reflect the project as a whole and may not be indicative of the individual raster files. See their self-contained metadata for more information. Species common names, scientific names, and species codes are as follows: Cape Sable seaside sparrow, Ammodramus maritimus mirabilis - ammami Florida grasshopper sparrow, Ammodramus savannarum floridanus - amsafl Florida scrub jay, Aphelocoma coerulescens - apco piping plover, Charadrius melodus - chme eastern indigo snake, Drymarchon corais couperi - drcoco whooping crane, Grus americana - gram wood stork, Mycteria americana - myam sand skink, Neoseps reynoldsi - nere Key deer, Odocoileus virginianus clavium - odvicl red-cockaded woodpecker, Picoides borealis - pibo Audubon’s crested caracara, Polyborus plancus audubonii - poplau Florida panther, Puma concolor coryi – pucoco snail kite, Rostrhamus sociabilis plumbeus - rosopl roseate tern, Sterna dougallii dougallii - stdodo Lower Keys marsh rabbit, Sylvilagus palustris hefneri - sypahe See metadata for references.
