The data presented in this report were collected during part of the 1962 cruise of the Chilean Navy training ship ESMERALDA. The work was sponsored by the Office of Naval Research (Contract Nonr 2216 [01]) and the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission. The Esmeralda sailed from San Francisco on July 6 and arrived at Easter Island August 1; after a 3 day stop she sailed on to Valparaiso, arriving August 20. Measurements were limited by the work that could be performed underway without interfering with the ship's operations. Temperature was measured by bathythermograph, samples of surface water were obtained for the determination of salinity and pigment concentrations, and measurements of the productivity of surface phytoplankton were made.
