In response to growing concerns regarding the safety of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) at intersections, the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) launched the Intersection Safety Challenge in Spring 2023. The Challenge aims to transform intersection safety through the development of innovative intersection safety systems (ISS) that use machine vision, sensor fusion, and artificial intelligence-based decision-making to identify, predict, and mitigate unsafe conditions involving vehicles and vulnerable road users in real time.
