Published by US Department of Transportation | Department of Transportation | Metadata Last Checked: January 20, 2026 | Last Modified: 2026-01-20
The Vulnerable road user In-depth Crash Investigation Study collected detailed pedestrian crash data for 87 crashes involving pedestrians in 2022. Skilled teams identified crashes at four sites across the United States and conducted inspections of scenes and involved vehicles. Pedestrian medical records were reviewed to document injuries. Engineers reviewed crash and injury data to establish pedestrian kinematic trajectories and injury causation scenarios, as well as crash avoidance assessments. Case data are available in a browser-based viewer which includes coded data elements, crash scene diagrams, and images of the crash scene and involved vehicle.
