Bathythermograph (XBT) data from AFRICAN COMET, AFRICAN METEOR, and others in the Alboran Sea, Andaman Sea or Burma Sea, and others from 1974-10-14 to 1976-05-18 (NCEI Accession 8900112)
This dataset includes bathythermograph (XBT) data from AFRICAN COMET, AFRICAN METEOR, ALEXANDER AGASSIZ, AMERICAN BAY, AMERICAN RESERVIST, C. J. MARIA, CAPT JOE MEDINA, CAROL VIRGINIA, CHERYL MARIE, CHICAGO, ENTERPRISE, EVELYN DA ROSA, FURMAN, G. WILLA, GINA KAREN, KAREN MARY, KATHLEEN, LUCKY STRIKE, M. VIVIAN, MARIETTA, NOAA Ship OREGON, PAN PACIFIC, PROUD HERITAGE, QUEEN MARY, SARATOGA, SEALIFT PACIFIC, SUNRISE, TYPHOON, USNS BOWDITCH, USNS De Steiguer, USNS Thomas Washington, USS BADGER, USS BROWNSON, USS GOLDSBOROUGH, USS GRIDLEY, USS H. B. WILSON, USS John S. McCain, USS KOELSCH, USS Luce, USS MEYERKORD, USS MISPILLION, USS Morton, USS Mullinnix, USS R. E. PEARY, USS RANGER, USS SAMPLE, USS Somers, USS WADDELL, USS Wainwright, and VICTORIA in the Alboran Sea, Andaman Sea or Burma Sea, Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Alaska, Gulf of Mexico, Gulf of Oman, Indian Ocean, Laccadive Sea, Mediterranean Sea, North Atlantic Ocean, North Pacific Ocean, Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, Philippine Sea, Red Sea, South Atlantic Ocean, South China Sea, and South Pacific Ocean from 1974-10-14 to 1976-05-18.
Data has been processed by NODC to the NODC standard Bathythermograph (XBT) (C116) format.
The C116/C118 format contains temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data record was comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. Unlike the MBT Data File, in which temperature values were recorded at uniform 5 m intervals, the XBT data files contained temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths were recorded at the minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to accurately define the temperature curve. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m. Prior to July 1994, XBT data were routinely processed to one of these standard types. XBT data are now processed and loaded directly in to the NODC Ocean Profile Data Base (OPDB). Historic data from these two data types were loaded into the OPDB.
